Setting Up Quantity Breaks

Learn how to create quantity breaks (volume discounts) to encourage customers to buy more.

Last updated: January 15, 2024

Quantity breaks (also called volume discounts or tiered pricing) encourage customers to buy multiple units of the same product by offering progressive discounts.

What Are Quantity Breaks?

Quantity breaks offer discounts based on quantity purchased:

Example:

  • Buy 1: $30.00 each
  • Buy 2-3: $27.00 each (10% off)
  • Buy 4+: $24.00 each (20% off)

The more they buy, the more they save per unit.

When to Use Quantity Breaks

Perfect for:

  • ✅ Consumable products (coffee, supplements, cosmetics)
  • ✅ Gifts (bulk buying for events)
  • ✅ Wholesale or B2B sales
  • ✅ Products with high repeat purchase rate
  • ✅ Clearing excess inventory

Not ideal for:

  • ❌ High-ticket items (cars, furniture)
  • ❌ One-time purchases (wedding dresses)
  • ❌ Highly personalized products
  • ❌ Products with very low margins

Creating Quantity Breaks

Step 1: Choose Your Product

  1. Go to V BundlesCreate Bundle
  2. Select "Quantity Breaks"
  3. Search for and select your product

Step 2: Define Your Tiers

Create 3-4 pricing tiers:

Tier 1: Single Purchase

  • Quantity: 1
  • Price: $30.00 (Regular price)
  • Discount: 0%

Tier 2: Small Bulk

  • Quantity: 2-3
  • Price: $27.00 each
  • Discount: 10% ($3 off per unit)

Tier 3: Large Bulk

  • Quantity: 4+
  • Price: $24.00 each
  • Discount: 20% ($6 off per unit)

Tips:

  • Start tier 2 at quantity 2 (easiest for customers)
  • Keep tiers simple (3-4 maximum)
  • Increase savings with each tier
  • Ensure you maintain healthy margins

Step 3: Calculate Your Pricing

Use this formula to maintain profitability:

Product Cost: $12
Regular Price: $30
Margin: $18 (60%)

Tier 2 (10% off): $27
Your Margin: $15 (50%) ✅ Still profitable

Tier 3 (20% off): $24
Your Margin: $12 (33%) ✅ Still profitable

Never discount below your break-even point!

Step 4: Customize Display

Choose Display Style:

Table View (Recommended)

┌──────────────┬─────────────┬───────────┐
│ Quantity │ Unit Price │ You Save │
├──────────────┼─────────────┼───────────┤
│ 1 │ $30.00 │ - │
│ 2-3 │ $27.00 │ Up to $9 │
│ 4+ │ $24.00 │ $24+ │
└──────────────┴─────────────┴───────────┘

  • Use 3 tiers maximum
  • Make threshold jumps logical (1, 2, 4+ not 1, 3, 7)
  • Clear, easy-to-understand pricing

2. Highlight Value

  • Show dollar savings, not just percentages
  • Use "You Save $X" messaging
  • Add visual indicators for best value

3. Position Strategically

  • Place above add-to-cart button
  • Make it prominent and eye-catching
  • Ensure mobile visibility

4. Test and Optimize

Track these metrics:

  • Average units per transaction
  • Tier distribution (which tier sells most)
  • Conversion rate by tier
  • Overall revenue impact

A/B test:

  • Different discount amounts
  • Various threshold quantities
  • Different messaging
  • Badge placements

Common Mistakes

Mistake #1: Too Many Tiers

❌ 6+ tiers confuse customers
✅ 3 tiers is optimal

Mistake #2: Unclear Savings

❌ "10% off tier 2"
✅ "Buy 2, save $6 total ($3 each)"

Mistake #3: Poor Visibility

❌ Small text at bottom of page
✅ Prominent table above add-to-cart

Mistake #4: Discounting Too Deeply

❌ 50% off kills margins
✅ 15-20% is the sweet spot

Mistake #5: No Mobile Optimization

❌ Table doesn't fit on mobile
✅ Responsive, scrollable design
